Dinner on Canggu Shortcut: an evening at Moon Lounge
Canggu Shortcut is loud, busy and full of choice. Here's what makes Moon Lounge an easy yes for dinner — the room, the kitchen and how to get a table.
Around sunset, it feels like half of Canggu is riding down the Shortcut: scooters, horns, neon signs and a new café every fifty metres. Dinner doesn't have to feel like that. Moon Lounge sits on Jalan Anggrek, right next to Canggu Shortcut — and once you're inside, the pace drops by half.
A room that slows you down
A living moss wall, tall palms, rings of warm light overhead, deep sofas and a glowing moon. It works just as well for a date as for a birthday for ten: quiet enough to talk, and pretty enough that phones only come out for photos.
A menu that suits the whole table
Japanese dishes are the heart of the kitchen. Good places to start: the Black Philadelphia roll with cuttlefish-ink rice, the Tiger Shrimp roll with mango and cream cheese, or the Unagi Bowl — grilled eel over rice with edamame and spicy mayo.
If someone at the table isn't in the mood for rice, there's plenty more: Caesar salad, beef tartare with truffle aioli, tom yum and Thai coconut chicken curry, dumplings with sour cream, the Moonburger, duck confit with sweet potato purée and salmon steak with creamy teriyaki. For dessert: a Dubai-style chocolate bar, mochi or the chocolate cheesecake with blackberry sauce.
Drinks for a long evening
Start with a house mocktail like Tropical Blue Moon, order a 1-litre jug of lemonade for the table, and finish with tea — from Bali Tropical with mango to Chinese shu puer. Everything else is in our drinks guide.
