Rolls and rice bowls in Canggu: what to order at Moon Lounge
Twenty-two Japanese dishes and three sets make choosing hard. Here's which bowl to order solo, which rolls to share and when a set is the smart move.
Japanese dishes are the biggest part of the Moon Lounge kitchen: four rice bowls, seven signature rolls, five baked rolls, six kinds of maki and three sets. That's a lot to take in on an empty stomach, so here's a short guide.
Eating solo? Order a bowl
A bowl is a whole dinner on one plate. All four come on Japanese rice with edamame and cucumber:
- Unagi Bowl — grilled eel, cream cheese and spicy mayo. Rich and comforting.
- Salmon Teriyaki Bowl — salmon with teriyaki sauce, tobiko mayo and orange tobiko.
- Ponzu Tuna Bowl — fresh tuna marinated in ponzu, with spicy mayo and black tobiko. The lightest and brightest of the four, and the closest thing to a poke bowl.
- Chicken Bowl — roasted marinated chicken with unagi glaze, for anyone who doesn't eat fish.
Sharing? Mix signature and baked rolls
Pick rolls with different textures and nobody at the table gets bored:
- Black Philadelphia — black cuttlefish-ink rice, cream cheese and crunchy cucumber, topped with salmon.
- Tiger Shrimp — shrimp with mango, lettuce and cream cheese: sweet and fresh.
- Philadelphia Special — tuna, tiger shrimp and ponzu.
- Crispy Bacon Chicken — Asian-style chicken, spicy sauce and crispy bacon. A good pick for anyone unsure about raw fish.
Baked rolls — with tuna, snow crab, shrimp, spicy salmon or spicy unagi — arrive warm under a creamy tobiko sauce. Order at least one if someone at the table prefers cooked food.
Can't decide? Take a set
- Maki Set 1 — salmon, cucumber and shrimp maki. A light start.
- Baked Set 1 — spicy salmon, shrimp and tuna baked rolls.
- Signature Set 1 — Black Philadelphia, Black California and Bluefin Tuna: three signature rolls in one go.
Something lighter
The cucumber and avocado maki are the simplest, fish-free rolls on the menu, and the chuka seaweed salad with sesame dressing makes a fresh side. If you have allergies or dietary needs, tell the team — they'll check the ingredients for you.
What to drink with it
Iced matcha, sencha or a citrus lemonade all work beautifully with sushi. See the full list on the menu or in our drinks guide.
A quick plan for the table
- For two: one bowl, one signature roll and a baked roll to share.
- For four: a set plus two or three rolls with different textures.
- Still hungry? Add a chuka salad or some dumplings.
